Raven Software’s latest patch for Call of Duty: Warzone was supposed to smooth things out for players in Season 4. Instead, it kicked off a fresh wave of frustration especially in Ranked Play. The developers pushed out an update on June 11 to correct an issue where some players had been unfairly dropped to a lower rank at the season’s start. On paper, it sounded like a fair fix. In practice? It accidentally set off a leaderboard meltdown.
Here’s what happened: Players who were affected by the initial bug were meant to get back the Skill Rating (SR) they had lost plus whatever SR they’d earned since. To ease the transition, they were also given three matches’ worth of demotion protection. But somewhere in the math, things went sideways. A number of players suddenly received huge SR boosts upwards of 5,000 points instantly catapulting them into Warzone’s top 250 rankings.
That sort of jump is practically unheard of in a grind-heavy mode like Ranked Play. And predictably, it didn’t go over well.
The community quickly picked up on it. Popular account CharlieIntel flagged the issue, and players flooded Reddit and X (formerly Twitter) with complaints. Some called the fix “horrible,” arguing it handed out high-tier placements to players who hadn’t earned them. One frustrated comment summed up the mood: “Went from Bronze to Diamond in a day? That’s not Ranked that’s a joke.”

But, they straight up have given players the SR difference, up to +5K SR, sending a lot of people into Top 250. pic.twitter.com/tPI0k4Xb8n
But the backlash didn’t stop there. The patch reopened old wounds about Warzone’s ongoing struggles with cheating. Accusations flew in the comment sections, with players claiming the leaderboard is already packed with boosters and hackers. A few even floated the idea of paying for a premium version of the game if it came with a real anti cheat system.
Meanwhile, as Warzone and Black Ops 6 wrestle with bugs and backlash, eyes are already drifting to the horizon. With Black Ops 7 officially revealed, it’s becoming clear that more of the development team’s energy may soon shift in that direction. Whether that leaves Warzone players feeling supported or sidelined remains to be seen.
